Ten Years of Liberty: What I Gained by Giving Back

When In Doubt, Lend a Hand
There is a saying I hold close - one I have learned from a tight-knit group of friends: when you get stuck in your own head, go help someone else. Serve. Support. Show up. That outward motion has a way of quieting the internal noise, and for me, it has been a guiding light.
As I wrap up my tenth year of volunteering with Liberty High School—and with other schools in our community—I have been doing some reflecting. This role I stepped into ten years ago has become more than just a side commitment. It has become a part of who I am.
The Life Lived Behind the Lens
These past ten years have brought plenty of changes in my own life. I have experienced the loss of both of my parents, supported my husband through an unexpected career transition, and watched my two sons forge their own paths - one serving in the Army Band, the other chasing his dream of becoming a pilot.
Through it all, the camera has been a constant companion. It has traveled with me to games, banquets, pep rallies, and senior sessions. These school events became more than just time on a calendar—they became anchors in the rhythm of life. Capturing these moments helped me stay grounded, stay connected, and stay grateful.
Grief and Gratitude, Side by Side
In June of 2023, I lost my mom. It was a quiet kind of heartbreak—one that settled in the background of everything, even as life kept moving. The annual Section 7 basketball event happened to begin around the same time, and while part of me wanted to retreat, I chose to keep showing up.
Being surrounded by noise, movement, and familiar faces brought a comfort I did not expect. I was grateful for something to focus on—something that reminded me I was not entirely alone. Volunteering gave me that space. It became a way to stay grounded, to keep moving, and to gently begin healing in the presence of others.
More Than Just a Volunteer
Looking back now, I see how much I have received through these years. I have been invited into some of the most important moments in students’ lives—milestones, achievements, traditions, and sendoffs. I have witnessed friendships grow, teams evolve, and families beam with pride.
I have also built relationships with other volunteers, coaches, parents, and staff. I have laughed on the sidelines, gotten teary at senior nights, and celebrated with students as they take that next big step. Volunteering is never just about giving—it is about sharing. And the return is immeasurable.
To Anyone Wondering If It Is Worth It…
It is. Whether you are handing out programs, organizing events, or simply showing up—what you give comes back to you in ways that matter.
If you are ever in a season where life feels uncertain, or even overwhelming, I encourage you to find a way to give back. You might be surprised how much light it brings—not just to others, but to you.
And if you ever feel like the weight is too much to carry, please know there is help. You are not alone. Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline—available 24/7, free and confidential.
Here is to ten years of Liberty, community, connection… and to whatever comes next.
